January 2, 1967. The National Bank of Congo issued this 5 Zaïres — or 500 Makuta — banknote at a time when the country was changing its name and its destiny. It is the oldest banknote in the MBONGO collection. The one that predates most of our memories.

What does MBONGO mean?
Mbongo means "money" in Lingala and Kikongo. The word comes from the copper that was used as currency in the Kingdom of Kongo. The word that each of us has heard a thousand times: at the market, at home, in the street.
